How SEL Fits with MNPS Strategic Plan
Education 2018: Excellence for Every Student is the five-year strategic plan for Metro Nashville Public Schools. It focuses on personalized learning to help students grow academically, socially and emotionally every year. Throughout the district, pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students and educators are engaged in personalized learning environments that integrate social, emotional and academic learning. The high school Academies model, middle prep/high school advisory, and community gatherings all serve to build close-knit learning communities, where students feel known and valued, and where learning is engaging and meaningful. There are a variety of approaches and programs that are being utilized to support SEL in the district, including Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), Responsive Classroom, COMP (Classroom Organization and Management Program), Restorative Practices and Mindfulness. Each of these programs and approaches share a common goal to support positive behavior and engagement, and to create emotionally and physically safe schools where children (and adults) can do their best learning. The mission of MNPS Social and Emotional Learning is to insure every student develops the social and emotional competencies essential for lifelong success. |
What is SEL?Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
